After studying art and architecture at the University of British Columbia, Sharon Butler trained with well-known weaver Glen Black of San Francisco returning to Vancouver.

 

She received a Canada Council young artist grant to explore three-dimensional weaving, exhibiting several new pieces at Fabricart (Vancouver Art Gallery, 1966). She has been represented in a group weaving exhibit and Art in Action both at the Vancouver Art Gallery and a one woman show at the New Design Gallery in Vancouver. Her work was chosen for display at an Arthur Erickson designed unit at Habitat at Expo 67 in Montreal and later shown in Venice during the Venice Bienniale 1968. Her designs are in many private collections as well as the permanent Canada Council collection.

 

She has been inspired by weavers Lenore Tawney and Sheila Hicks to push the boundaries of two- dimensional weaving. She is inspired by the vibrant surroundings of the Pacific West coast.
